HUNGATE ARCHIVE MATERIALS AND RARE FILM FOOTAGE PRESENTED WITH MUSIC AND PHOTOGRAPHY ENVISAGING A UTOPIAN YORK IN 2026
The latest collaboration in the Vespertine series sees York St John University partner up with My Future York to ask the question: What do we want York to look like in ten years?
To help with answering this question, we look to the past with a film of the Hungate area, restored and presented by Yorkshire Film Archive and screened in Hiscox, one of York’s most futuristic buildings. The footage was donated to the archive on hand made film reels in a well-loved rainbow biscuit tin and gives a glimpse into the past of Hungate showing the street parties and houses there in the 1930s.
Hungate’s contrasting heritage spaces then provide backdrop for utopian slide projections and futuristic soundscapes by York St John students. Also learn more about My Future York and art collective Reetso’s research to date and contribute your visions for York in 2026.
The trail ends at The Black Swan, where historians and futurists alike are invited to a future folk party set in the year 2026!
